Beauty
Parlors:
The Newest Germ Hangout
It’s a Friday evening! After a long,
stressful week, you’d just give your right arm for a soothing massage,
surrender your head for a aromatic wash and get a facial done so that you
can feel human again. A couple of hours of total respite, away from your
work desk and from domestic chores, is just what you need to get into a
great weekend mood.
But wait, what is that? Is that hair peeping out of the hairbrush in the
parlour? Yes it is, and it is most definitely not yours. And is the
beautician using the towel that she used for the last customer to wipe
your face? Suddenly, the idea of visiting a salon does not seem such a
great one after all. You wish you had stayed at home and washed your hair
in your clean bathroom.
You don’t need to be a qualified doctor or a scientist to know how
dangerous these small things can be in spreading diseases. Most young
housewives prefer not to visit salons too often if they can help it. Says
Anjali Prasad, a young Delhi-based woman, “Many salons are a breeding
ground for germs. I would rather use a homemade face pack than go to a parlor
and risk getting some infection.”
Are salons really a breeding ground for infectious germs or do some women
just over-react? The truth is somewhere in between, says Blossom Kochhar,
one of India’s leading cosmeticians, aroma therapists and author of many
books on beauty, skin and hair care. “Unhygienic parlors are definitely
spreading an alarm about the perils of a salon. The combs, brushes,
make-up sponges and other tools like waxing knives that are make women
wince. It is always advisable to go to places that maintain high standards
when it comes to cleanliness and hygiene,” she says.
According to experts, at unhygienic salons one runs the risk of
contracting bacterial infection. The risk escalates tremendously if you go
for a manicure or a pedicure. There is also a high chance of fungal
infection if unclean instruments are used on a person immediately after
it’s been used on someone with an infection.
So make sure that all instruments are properly disinfected before they are
used on you.
Infections can range from fungus in the hair to a ring worm or a rash
during waxing or even pimples while removing blackheads. In fact, a
blackhead remover, if not sterilized can also spread bacterial infection
on the face.
According to Clear Skin Institute’s dermatologist Dr Suman Prasad, if
you are going in for a facial it could mean skin rashes because dirty
salons are happy homes for staphylococcus bacteria that causes pimples and
boils.”
The dermatologist suggests that there should preferably be no direct
contact of the beautician’s hands with the face. “Disposable
gloves are the best.” says Dr Prasad.
According to Dr Prasad, if you take these simple precautions at a beauty
salon, you will not only look better but also feel better. She adds,
“You don’t want to come out of the beauty salon with a rash and go
rushing to a doctor, do you?”
After all, beauty is really skin deep!
SAFETY TIPS
* Do not use a product to which liquid is
added. Adding liquid could trigger bacteria.
* Take your own cosmetics, nail cutter, nail file, hairbrush and shampoo
to the parlor.
* Always insist on using disposable stuff.
* While getting a facial, make sure the attendant wears disposable
gloves.
